I believe one can swop back from a water meter during the first year it's installed? Worth looking into the possibility of that.
Fuel - gas and electric are £58 per month together currently and I use however much fuel I decide to (ie my gas central heating is kept on all day basically) and I'll whack on a fire occasionally for a bit of a top-up if I want to.
What type of house do you live in? Those bills are really low considering you have the heating on all day. I've switched with Moneysaving Expert to the lowest tariff.Grocery Challenge 2018

Detached 2 bedroom bungalow.
The windows are all doubleglazed. I have a shower (electric) and not a bath - standard type and not powershower. Whenever it came to replacing machinery (fridge/freezer/cooker/washing machine) I always make sure I pick the lowest fuel usage ones possible that meet my other criteria. All floors (apart from kitchen and bathroom) have thickest possible carpet underlay underneath the carpet. My taste is for adequate width curtains at window (not the narrowest that will cover the window that some have). Also my taste on curtains is the longest ones that are feasible (not little "shortie" ones that maybe don't even cover the windowsill). Floorlength and double width 'r us re curtains basically and they've all got linings one way or another.
My supplier is E-On (which seems to come up on the cheapest companies I can use each time I check to see) and I make sure I swop tariffs with them as need be.
EDIT; I'm wondering if there is a difference in our boilers too? I believe the modern ones use rather less - and mine is 4 years old - so very up-to-date.0 -
I'm in a 4 bed detached total 2 adults and 1 child - my water bill is metered at £33 per mth and its been around that for yrs even when my eldest 2 where at home.
Walls insulated.
Baths for me every other night for the old RA and dd, showers every day
Gas CH boiler 9 years old
WM on daily sometimes
DW daily
Electric and gas are £89 dual and highest i'ts been is £109 I think. on timer
Water butt for plants
Mum went to meter last yr and she was told if the water payments increased she had 2 years to change back to rates as the 1st yr is used for monitoring.
Not sure what she pays as she's alone now.
Eldest dd fitted a water meter and it was moving all the time - Yorkshire water told her to turn everything off and it showed that the main was shared by next door - it was taken out.“You’re only here for a short visit.

My gas boiler was replaced for a newer one as well, I live in a mid-terraced three bedroomed cottage its quite small so easier to heat I guess0

Not the first time I've heard of this. What type of house are you in and where have they put the meter? Terraced houses and other older dwellings often share water pipes so the stopcock in the street feeds more than one house. It's the reason I can't have a meter fitted ditto others I know. The thing is ensuring the water company actually knows!!0 -
Rereading OP's post I'm wondering about the dishwasher use. I'm on my own but even with 2 adults I doubt I'd be filling the dishwasher every day.
PS I too can't have a meter, but being 'deemed' to have one halved my bill.0 -
Why did they say you cant have a meter? I only asked as I was told that first time around and the surveyor hadnt seen the connection points in the street! My bill has dramatically changed since using a water meter.0

A old dishwasher will use a lot of water, our 10 year old one is reserved for special occasions because of this, we are under south west water both out at work all day and pay an average of £66 a month, I do still have the youngest lad at home but he out more than home and I don't shower everyday ( I do wash but have eczema ) so depending where you live £50 could be about right on mains water.0

Reminds me to say - I don't have a dishwasher or a tumbledryer either.0

water meter, mains water, shower only, dishwasher used every day, washing machine a few times a week often on just the hand wash/wool cycle, single person who cooks from scratch. Last water bill £19 a month, arrived last week. Wessex water, the dearest water in the country, after SW water0
