I really like the below but as I got my King Size bed with mattress for under £300, I am a little reluctant to £409 for something that is a second bed for a second room that is seldom used (though it will also be the bed for the little one once he starts sleeping by himself.

Can anyone recommend a similar product just cheaper?

Not sure what you question is? That seems to be a statement.0

IKEA sell the same thing without the mattresses and it's a lot cheaper. You should be able to get 2 much cheaper mattresses from somewhere else - and if this is only going to be a spare bed/bed for a child, perhaps you only need one?
If you'd consider a different design, perhaps this: https://www.bedkings.co.uk/bed-frames/day-bed/madison-day-bed.html?___SID=U0
