Can you get a mortgage with a heart condition?

Hello
My youngest daughter has been diagnosed with an atrial flutter, plus I am currently being checked to see if I have a genetic heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. If I am found to have it, the hospital have told me my children need to be checked out too. I am obviously concerned for their health but also for their financial future as well as I have been told that if you are diagnosed with a heart condition, you can't get a mortgage or life cover or they will be at unaffordable rates. Is this true? Is there a mortgage/insurance company that specialises in people with medical problems?

Please advise me if you have any information or experience in this situation

    This is more related to the insurance forum.

    However, there are specialist insurers and brokers out there that will be able to support you with heart related medical conditions. It wouldn't be the same price as someone with a clean bill of health, but there would be options available to you.

    You can get a Mortgage, health questions do not get asked for a Mortgage.
    You would struggle to get life insurance or many health related insurances. Those that you do get could have an exclusion (and be normal prices) or as you say be expensive.

    However, you could find you have life insurance through work (Death in service) or with a pension. It is not ideal, but it is something and something is better than nothing.

  • My husband has dilated cardiomyopathy and has a mortgage but not life insurance, he has life insurance through work though.
  • I have had a mortgage for over 20 years but no life assurance. I have serious heart and lung problems. I was never asked about my health when applying for a mortgage. I was in employment so it is possible.

    To be blunt (sorry) the mortgage company aren't going to lose out if they lend someone money to buy a house and that person subsequently dies. There is a house, that is worth more than the amount lent, for them to claim from.

    Insurance is another story and it would probably be difficult or uneconomical to get life cover with a serious medical condition. I imagine that travel insurance would involve more money and/or exclusions too.
