I favour Courvoisier VSOP but I'm wondering whether there are any own brand cognacs any of you would recommend? :beer:

i inherited a lot of bottles of spirits when my dad died a few years ago (and in the collection were some really nice Cognac bottles, really nice shape glass bottles in display boxes).


Anyway, i drank a bottle of the HINE Cognac as there were 4 of the same bottle.


everytime it empties i refill it with cheap supermarket own brand cognac and no one notices


To be honest i don't know the difference between Cognac and Brandy?


Over Christmas i sometimes drink Baileys with a shot of Courvoisier (gives the Baileys a little extra kick)

I've been looking at cognac today too : )

Messers. T, A and W are doing Courvoisier VSOP at £25 for 70cl. Mr. S is asking for £35! No own brands at T or A, the S own brand is £22 and the W own brand is £24.50.

So I'd probably stick with the Courvoisier this year, unless the German supermarkets have a good offer on.

Can only be called Cognac if it's made in the region, still brandy though.

Courvoisier is a shadow of what it once was and the VSOP is, in my estimation, very poor value, being sharp and thin. If you want to give a bottle of cognac as a gift and want a brand name, I would suggest you look for Remy Martin, which is on offer in several places this year, I believe.

If you don't want a brand name then I can recommend Aldi's own brand Chevalier. It's a VS (the terms 'VS' 'VSOP' 'XO' etc refer to the length of time the component spirits have been aged before blending and bottling) but it is, to my taste, a much smoother and more acceptable drink.

If you are looking to explore VSOP cognacs, the smaller houses are the way to go, but its an expensive hobby! The names to look for and which you are likely to find in the High St, are Hennesy (overpriced, in my view, but arguably the best), Hine and Remy.

Baileys with a shot of cognac sounds fab, and the Chevalier from Aldi is definitely one to try!
