Paying tax for an odd job

Options
Hello,
I am employed by a company, but I did some freelance work for another company for four months. I am not planning to do more freelance work in the near future.

What do I have to do to pay tax for the amount I got from the freelance job?

Kind Regards

  • So, I don't have to register as a self-employed, right?

Borderline case IMO. When you speak to HMRC, make it clear that it was a one off event with no intention to trade on a regular basis and that you'd simply like to pay income tax on the additional income.

If they ask you to submit a self-assessment, it's your decision on whether or not to simply declare it in the "other income" box or fill out a self-employment sheet.

If your earnings were below the thresholds for class 2 and 4 NIC then in it really doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to the tax liability so I'd stick it in the "other income" box.
