Changes to job role after being off sick

Hello,

I have just heard that someone who is covering my work while I'm off sick (have been off for 1 month and due to be off 1 more month) has been given a temporary pay rise in my absence to cover my work. I have a feeling that when I go back to the office this may turn out to be a permanent change, is it likely that my role will completely change when I return? Its strange because the person who normally covers me when I am off on annual leave and on my team doesn't seem to be picking up my work it is being done by someone on a different team who's manager I have made a complaint about. I have a feeling that this work will be taken off me so I can be moved to a different part of the office. Can they do this?

Another thing, I went on to my computer as I can access it remotely to check my contract on our HR system (to check the above) and my computer has been removed from the account. I can access my emails remotely through the internet so they haven't blocked me from that. Is this normal? How do I get my contract now? I didn't really want to make it obvious and have to ask for them.

Am I overthinking or should I be worried?

Thank you

  • Also I haven't been contacted by HR at all, they have been on holiday but are back this week. Is this normal? Feel like I am in limbo waiting for an email or a call.

What changes are we talking about? Are we talking changing you from an admin staff to a truck driver, or from an admin staff of one area, to an admin staff of a different area.

They can change your job responsibilities. You probably have something in your job description/contract RE needs of the business/any other 'reasonable' duties. This can happen whether you are off sick or not. I note that you are off with workplace stress. Although you attribute that to colleagues and atmosphere, rather than the work itself, perhaps if they are making moves it may be to help you overcome that, remove you from the people that are stressing you out.

The management can choose who to cover you and who not to. Maybe they really wanted Person A, but that person wanted them to pay them more, and they thought that was worth the investment. I don't know what the relevance of you making a complaint about a manager, them removing your access to a computer whilst off sick, or HR not contacting you (you have a sicknote, not all places will until shortly before your return to work)
  • Thank you Marlie,

I thought that the manager I complained about (who is not my manager) has requested that his staff member cover some of my role so that they don't have to give it back to me when I return and can move me from the seating area near his team. We are in an open plan office and I have been vocal about treatment of other staff that I have witness which hasn't gone down very well and I have made a complaint. Perhaps that is what they are gearing up to do.

I would think the changes to my role would be to take all of my work I do with this one department off me and perhaps give me something else to do.. I just don't know. I'm overthinking things.

I'm just worrying because if HR haven't contacted me to discuss the matter and I can't access my computer I'm wondering if they will just sack me before I return. Bit of a worry.

    Thank you

There are all sorts of things that can go wrong with remote access and that's not including a change of software and/or a new log in procedure. If you are worried, ask.

You're off sick. You being unable to remotely access your work computer should not be concerning you.

How long have you worked there?

I think you're worrying too much at the moment, if you are off you should be relaxing rather than attempting to log in. As others have said they can make reasonable changes to your job and surely if you're off with stress then making changes is a good thing?
  • It does concern me quite a bit actually. I only noticed as I wanted to log in to get some documents off my HR system with regards to my contract. It seems strange to me that that access would have been blocked out of the blue after working there for years. I will contact them to ask them to send me the documents.

    Thank you for the responses

    Cheers

Not really, I enjoy my work and have done a great job for the many years so to take this off of me would make me feel pretty crappy if I'm honest. The job itself is not the problem its a few senior members of staff that I'm having issues with (been going on for about 12 months but finally came out about a month ago) but the work falls under their department so I suppose that will be taken off me and I'll be given something else to do. I think this will make the situation worse.

    Thank you

The computer has been removed from my account but the account is still active so I can log in.
