like a friend of mine who owns a house in the midlands but rents a 1 bedroom flat in zone1 London
It's not feasable to move from a 5 bed to a 1-bed, not feasible to move away from dependent family members and not feasible to give up a long term family home for short term working.
I do wonder though whether the increasing London centric nature of senior positions does add a little to the problem. Although a iminority we are taking up 2 homes (this is not always out of choice when you are 50+ and senior positions are limited).0 -

The biggest housing problem for London is that the communist councils in Zone 2 the likes of Abbots and Corbyn areas grossly over build social homes right next to zone 1 and mostly filled them with non workers like pensioners single-mother asylum seekers and basic English speaking economic migrants.
Zone 1 and 2 should have no more than 5-10% social homes. If the councils in those areas sold their social stock down to 5-10% you would find rents and prices a good deal lower (20% my guess) and you would also find that the trains and tubes were less congested as many more of the workers in the city/docklands/westminster could live close to work rather than commute in.0
