easy Car Club opinions

Hi All

Has anyone ever used the easy car club (either as a renter or a rentee?)

Considering buying a car for this purpose, just a small cheap runabout and renting it out by the day. They cover insurance for the other driver whilst its booked out and as it's just a cheap car I wouldn't be overly bothered if they kerbed it, for example!

The cheapest I found in my area is £50 a day to rent out an Astra (not sure what that works out at after easy car club take their cut).

Car criteria:
15 years old (or less) at time of joining
Insurance group of 1-50 – most makes and models of cars in the UK are accepted
Replacement value not more than £40,000
Less than 120,000 miles
No custom modifications
Expiry date of vehicle tax (tax disc) and MOT (if applicable) must be more than 30 days away
Car currently comprehensively insured in the UK

We did it on our car before finally deciding to sell it. In the 3 months we were signed up we had one customer who, for £20, took the car at 7am on a Saturday and dropped it off at 11pm. Lovely guy but as well as driving 200 miles, it was just awful timings to deal with on a weekend. You also have to make sure the car is freshly cleaned, has petrol, you fill in the damage register with the renter on pick up, and also sign off any damage at drop off (quite difficult in the pitch Black!).

I don't know if I would do it again, there weren't enough people interested to make it worthwhile. If you have pincode entry to the car it might be better, but you still need to check for damage immediately on return. You also need to consider what kind of clientele is attracted to a £40 a day hire of a 15 year old Astra. It's certainly not worth buying a car for, but if you already have or need a car it's worth a shot. You can get £50 as a sign up bonus through Topcashback if you do go ahead with it.

Thanks for your thoughts. Doesn't seem like it's a go-er buying another car just for this purpose! One customer in three months doesn't sound like there was a huge demand.

We weren't exactly expecting our doors to be kicked down, but yes, the lack of interest was surprising especially given there were at least 5 cars within a 1 mile radius of which we were very clearly the cheapest. I think most people were probably just like us - barely use the car but are fed up with insurance costs and depreciation so looking to recoup some costs. We had a 2011 Focus Sport with everything in it that got driven twice a month. Now we have a rail card but £200 more in our pocket each month. :beer:

I bet if you had a van it'd be way more popular given people hire them often to move house etc!
