As far as I'm aware, when Nestle created the Nespresso machine they didn't copyright the pods, which is why you can buy loads of pods from other brands to use in it. Then they created the Dolce Gusto machine and did copyright the pods, so you can't really get alternative brands for that one (or you can, but they're not easily available and they aren't that great). So if you want a machine that takes other brands of pods apart from the Nestle ones the I think the Nespresso is the one to go for, although I don't know if they do a lot of things for that machine that aren't black coffees (i.e. hot chocs, milky coffees etc), at least not in the 'official' pods. There is the Tassimo machine which is from Bosch but I don't know much about other pods for that, sorry.
I'm not sure where the best place is for pods as I don't use them (I just found out about the machines when someone wanted one as a gift!) but there are loads of places online that sell them.0 -
About 5 years ago, when I had enough money to buy a very special coffee machine, I did my homework, and realised that the pod machines are cheaper so that you actually spend a lot more buying pods. In the spirit of this board, I also felt that pods were wasteful and limiting.
So I bought a really good machine which grinds beans - I buy Equal Exchange from our local wholefood co-op. It makes beautiful coffee, and I put the grounds on my deep bed to repel slugs.
I do realise that pods suit a lot of people, and I also know that I am not actually answering the question - but as a lot of people will read this out of interest, I wanted to add another pov, I hope that's OK.0 -
Pods are extremely wasteful, bad for the environment, and in my humble opinion not to be encouraged.
Think how much packaging is involved in 500g of coffee in pods compared to 500g in a bag.
And also, if you're making coffee for more than a couple of people the first one has gone cold or been drunk by the time the last one has been made. To say nothing of the cleaning cycle you have to run if you're swapping from a milky drink to a non-milky one.
In short, they're wasteful, expensive, and inconvenient.
Sorry - you go ahead. Don't mind me.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Not sure about the UK, but here in Spain fake dolce gusto pods are readily available. You can also reuse the pods a few times- plenty of information online.
Have to agree that I'm not overly keen but DH loves it.0 -
The most moneysaving option is to buy a machine that makes proper coffee and make that instead. They are not much different price wise but the whole life costs of ownership are less in terms of money and the environment.0

Lidl sell cappuccino, latte and americano pods to fit dolce gusto machines £2.49 a pack0

Get a moka pot or an aeropress instead .0

I use Nespresso machines both at home and work, and I usually get Nespresso pods cheapest offers from this online seller: Mugpods Ltd my brother recommended. Aside from delicious coffee, Nespresso machines are very easy to use and maintain. It’s also reliable when you don’t have enough time to prepare your own drink, especially during the morning rush.“The happier you are the more beautiful you become.”0

You can buy a refillable stainless steel pod for the Nespresso machine from Amazon - no plastic waste and you can use your favourite ground coffee in it.0
