Are your colleagues needing to justify themselves when they book the time off? If they just put in a request and have it approved you could try the same.

Or if you are planning to be around the area and could make other arrangements for your son, could you try two blocks of holiday with one work day in the middle?

We had a 2 week max. policy years ago when I worked for MOD. Hols had to be approved by foreman or above, so I got manager to approve 2 weeks, then foreman to approve the following 2 weeks, obviously without mentioning the previous. Got away with it albeit with much whinging!
  • Why not take the two weeks before the late August Bank Holiday, which extends it slightly?
  • Annoying as it may be, just be grateful you don't live in the US.

Most Americans only get two weeks off right now. But many don't even take the full two weeks out of fear of losing their jobs. One in four gets no paid vacation at all, not even holidays. Overall, Americans have less vacation time than workers in any other advanced economy.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • Telling a porky not a good idea for me to do. For one it is not the kind of person I am and my car has tracker so they would know I was ribbing or presume their car was nicked,

fully understand the 2 week limit. just think it should be fair for everyone. love the place I work at but has crazy sense of HR sometimes

Stop worrying about things you can't change. Fair or not in your opinion, it is what it is.

I'm sure there something flawed in my logic here, but...

You are allowed a maximum of two weeks leave, ten working days. You don't want to fly abroad. And you wish to take this time to maximise your time with your son. Presumably your son is at school? So has two weeks at Christmas, two weeks at Easter, six weeks in the summer, and a weeks half term inbetween all these? Why can't you maximise your time with your son across the year and still stay within the two weeks policy? If you had two weeks in the summer, a week at Christmas, a week each for two half terms - that's five full weeks. Which must be a big chunk out of your leave entitlement?

To maximise time with his son he would actually be better to take the holiday in one week periods each time. That way he get 9 days with him each time, a total of 45 days assuming 5 weeks holiday. By taking 2 weeks at a time he is actually reducing the time with his son by 4 days per year.
