anyone help with explaining the Airmiles system?
Planning on going to Australia next year with hubby and baby (while baby still under 2 years).
Someone suggested collecting airmiles which could be used towards upgrading to clubclass/business class etc
Have jsut got Natwest credit card with airmiles (1 for £20) plus also have Tesco Clubcard which converts to airmiles. And have joined BAA WorldPoints system. Has anyone any idea how to maximise the benefits (and how much i would need?) Looked on airmiles website but didn't find the answer!

1 Air Mile for a £20 spend?? Hardly generous. You'd have to purchase £10,000 worthof goods and services to qualify for a single return trip to Amsterdam.

Sites such as https://www.flyertalk.com will have info on what's available.

I have 26 k virgin airmiles however to get an upgrade on my next trip I need to book 11 months in advance and hope for the best as they only release 3 seats for FF, so its all pants really,however on my american airlines I have 26 k and am elidgble for a one way upgrade and presently on a waiting list, if I get it I will be happy if not its no big deal as they last 3 years.

I have over 40,000 Virgin miles... I haven't noted any problems with availability for trips I have tried to book with 'miles'.
Maybe it's your particular route.

Hi Skinty Mum, Get yourself a Virgin white card, this gets you 1 air mile per pound. Get yourself a Virgin Black card pay £80 annual fee gets you two air miles per pound. Before you jump go to www.virgin.com/flyingclub and look around, join up its free!
Understand this though, if you think you can travel peak time on any discount or any airmiles scheme your going to be disappointed.
Next best is a package deal again say from Virgin, you'll save money on a car hire as well.
The best way though is do it yourself trawling the websites, expedia etc. I think you'll find Martin Lewis has got some popular site recommends listed somewhere, good luck!

Are we confusing two things here?

I don't think AIRMILES (the company) do upgrades?

Upgrades are available by collecting 'frequent flier miles' with the airlines.
