PGCE for Primary School Teaching

Has anyone here any experience of applying for/doing the PGCE Primary school qualification?

I'm looking to retrain but wondered what it involved, especially with 2 kids and bills to pay!

Have you already got a degree in the area you want to teach?

I was to do a pgce after my degree but in the end didn't bother.

Most of my uni mates all went to England or Scotland to do their pgce basically because spaces in unis here are in very high demand.

Obviously would be ideal to do it here I dont know your circumstance or anything or if more spaces are available for part time learners.

In regard to costs I think there's a huge push for teachers and a lot of government schemes and grants.

Aren't teaching jobs in NI ridiculously hard to get?

    More teachers than places etc.
  • I've an honours degree in computer science.

Apparently men are very underrepresented in primary school teaching so that should work in my favour.

My brother trained to be a primary teacher, couldn't find permanent work here despite being highly desireable (very sporty, has football coaching badges etc), he subbed a lot, and did the odd maternity cover, now doing something else

Did you apply for a pgce? As a teacher myself i wouldn't recommend it now. In this country anyway. There are many more teachers than jobs. We had an english teaching job which had over 80 applicants including current heads of departments from the mainland. Newly qualified teachers have limited job opportunities in this country at the minute.
