Starting to look into pensions...can anyone help?

Hi! A newbie here!
I'm 26 years old and am looking into getting a pension. However, I don't know where to start! I've got an ISA, though.
I actually arranged an appointment to see an financial adviser in Barclays. It seems, looking back on these threads, that this isn't the right way to go for pensions advice. My friend told me to attend the appointment anyway but don't sign up for anything ;-) .
My company doesn't offer a pension plan. Could I do my own research without seeing a IFA? I just need laymans advice. Do I need a stakeholders or personal pension?
I really appreciate anyone's help and patience. I'm quite lost!
Thank you.

Yes. You just need to research the 50 or so pension providers and 2000 fund options to see which is right for you.Do I need a stakeholders or personal pension?
Depends on what you are after, how much you are paying and with many, how long you have left. Your age certainly suggests a PPP could be cheaper than SHP. How do you want to invest?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

My comment would be, do not purchase any form of investment from a bank, you will get much better advice from an IFA. Check out www.unbiased.co.uk for an IFA in your area who specialises in pensions. There is a voucher which means your first appointment will be free of charge.0 -
Thank you so much for replying.

I'm sorry - I'm not sure what you mean. Can you please explain?

Ah, thought so. I was wondering whether the meeting would be useful. I didn't realise the first appointment is free. What criteria should I look for in a IFA? Is there a one-off charge?0 -
I've just found the IFA thread and article! I will look through that for essential information.0
