New job whilst off sick

Hi, just looking for some advice as I've read a lot of conflicting information on the Internet. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with depression and have been signed off sick by my GP. I've been off work around 5 weeks, my FIT note expires next week.
Last week I applied for a new job and I am attending an interview today. If I am offered the job should I return to work and hand my notice in immediately? My notice period is 4 weeks. I'm worried about my HR department being asked for references and my boss realising I attended an interview whilst off sick.

Depends.
What is the plan if you don't get the job.
seems you have decided you want to move on anyway.
DO you think your current job is contributing to your problem?0 -
Hi yes my current job certainly contributes to my depression. I feel a change would help me a lot. If I don't get the job I plan on returning to my current place of work next week either way.0

How long have you worked there?
Moving on is an option but so is trying to resolve any workplace issues.
It may be that one way or another you need to move forward and it may be an option to open dialogue with the employer, it may be that things are not working and it is mutually beneficial for you to move on.
If the boss is the sort that will take the hump and you need a reference a discussion and short delay before resigning may help.
it is generally recommended that you don't resign till you have a firm offer that can often be after references.0 -
Thanks. I'm just quite confused since I've read some people choose to hand their notice in an continue to be on the sick never returning to that place of work. I feel I shouldn't give my employer as a reference or resign until I've returned to work for a little while but I also didn't want to pass this new job opportunity.0

I've worked there almost 10 years now.0
