Should I pay off my Debt with my Savings

  • Well, I wouldn't put the money back into a fixed bond; it doesn't meet your needs to move out and pay off the debt. I would get some financial advice (oh, wait, you are).

The plan should be to come up with a budget that allows you to pay off your debt using your salary. If you can't quite do that, use the minimum possible from your inheritance to cover it. Then, use the remainder of the inheritance in a LISA or whatever else will be better for building up a deposit.

If you are going to stay living at home (seems like a good plan) you need to engage your Mum in the plan. Tell her you've heard the 'advice' about the fixed bond but you feel that there might be better options for saving for a deposit and you need to investigate them as well as finding a way to manage your current debt.

I'm sorry you've been struggling with depression too. Part of depression is catastrophic thinking, so please try to remember that this debt isn't a disaster; it's a problem and it can be solved. You're probably earning a bit more now and you are more aware of your spending habits; you know you 'comfort shop' so don't carry those credit cards around.

Two more things. Join a gym, seriously, I know it sounds like more money, but exercise is amazingly good for you and will make you feel more positive. And if your Mum wants something to do, give her the credit cards. Tell her you're only allowed to use them in genuine emergencies.

Sending very best wishes - good luck.
