Need advice - job offer

Hello!

My dilemma is I currently am employed full time in a job which I love and challenges me.

But I went to an interview yesterday for a job I had forgotten I applied for. I found out this morning I’ve been offered the position.

The dilemma I face is do I take it up? It’s only a 12 month contract and is the complete opposite side of the country where I have no support network at all.

I would be moving the hours away from any family or friends to take up a role that isn’t permanent. Any advice?

Both are good jobs... but my current one is lower paid but the other one would work out the same with the cost of living being more there. I’m so confused.

I don’t want to end up in a year’s time with no job or do I stay in my one at the moment close to my family and friends in a job that’s permanent and I love. What would you do?

I would stick to what I have.

1 year contract with no job at the end of it, is not enough for me to leave what I have and move else where with all the extra costs.

Why on earth would you apply for another job, never mind contemplate taking it, if this how you feel about your job?
  • I'd suggest making a list of the pros and cons of each option. Looking at it on paper that way can really give you some perspective :)
  • Hi Mac,

I applied because this new job seems a step up in the career ladder and seemed a good opportunity. But I thought it would be a lot more permanent

Presumably you found out about it being only a year's contract when you went for the interview - as happened to me on an occasion.

Personally if I was in need of a permanent role then I would decline it (in my situation I wasn't offered the role though I'm guessing my realisation that the role that I went for wasn't permanent said I wouldn't have accepted it in any case) unless I could afford to be unemployed.

The way to look at it is that you went for a job that was a step up, got an interview and was offered the job. That suggests you are capable of the role - you just need to find that permanent job advert now

I think it depends on the jobs.

Moving away is always a bog step, and I would consider the costs of doing so, and the possibility of a further moving in a years time.

Consider what benefits the new role would give you? Is it likely to put you in a stronger position to get a new, better job after a year?

What are your prospects for moving on/up in your current job?

To be honest, given that you currently have a job you love, and which continues to challenge you, and you are happy in where you are living, it doesn't seem that there is much reason to move.

The fact you were offered the new job is good - it suggests that you did well at the interview and have the necessary skills, so you should be able to apply for similar role in future if you get to a stage where you feel that you have exhausted the progress you can make in your current role.

depending on the size of the company you are with, you can also talk to your manager about opportunities for further progression within your current role.

It sounds like although you love your current job, you want to progress your career, so do you not see a chance to do that with your current employer? As TBagpuss suggests, you can always have a chat with your boss about the possibility. If not, then its just a question of whether you want to take the risk of moving when it's only for a year. As others have said, balance up the pros on cons of staying or going. Some people will think you won't get anywhere without taking risks, while others will value job security. I know what I'd choose to do, but your outlook might be different from mine.

Yes, I would like to mirror that one.

Though in fairness I've done it myself! Applied for other jobs and bottled them last minute (better the devil you know).

Then again, change is always good and with change comes growth/opportunity.

OP: make a list of pros and cons and take it from there.
  • Presume you now know why it's a temporary/fixed term job? Often these jobs have a reason why it's temporary or unfavourable terms - and nothing stops anyone treating you like a temp which can be a different feeling to when you are nice and secure with a permanent job.

My last interview heavily sold much more holiday time which especially angers me - when it turns out they can't even cope with bare minimum. Let alone development.

I don't know if I would move for something temporary, sorry.

Advice from others is never going to be worth anything in this situation. Go with your gut. Then if it isn't the right decision you have nobody to blame but yourself. Either decision could be right. You'll never know which was best. So - what do you think is the right one?
