I'd be asking for a copy of the contract that you've signed. You needs to know what the terms and conditions are of your employment with them.

I appreciate that it's a bar but having a staff meeting in the middle of the night after work for 2 or more hours isn't reasonable. If they need to have a staff meeting, it should be during the day. I've worked in a bar and when we had our very rare staff meetings - they lasted about 20 mins...what the heck does the management need to do with ALL the staff for 2 or more hours on a weekly basis???

If it's anything like the bars I have been into recently, the meeting will consist of the speaker ignoring the other staff and doing their best not to acknowledge their presence for most of the meeting.
  • Hi guys, thank you for the feedback.

I told my boss that I'm not going for the simple fact that it's not paid. And the fact it could potentially last until midnight. I pointed out that it can't be mandatory attendance with absolutely no pay, and he backed down and said he'll happily catch me up another time. I hinted from now on to save my poor colleagues who go to these things that the points should be wrote up in a bulletin or newsletter so hopefully he takes notice of that.
  • What sort of "bar" holds staff meetings from 10pm for two hours? For most bars that's quite a busy time.

Is it a club opening after midnight?
  • Who's manning the bar when everyone's in the staff meeting.

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time
  • Hmm, any possibility of it being a facade to get some free labour out of you?

Haven't worked in those sort of places before, but I reckon you'll be risking/losing your job if you kick up a fuss here. That's irrespective of whether or not they are breaking the law.

I think its more about your own personal preference. Do the positives of this job outweigh the negatives? Also, maybe look round for better work.
