I found out someone took ovo prepay in my name using my email address a few doors away. Of course someone the prepayment meter has racked up a debt of £1,800 ive explained to ovo serval times who told me my names been taken off. But im.still getting emails saying I now got a default and now going to the county court which of course is stressing me out and now after sending them all the proff they have now stressed me out to a point where I cant sleep

What can I do

Surely a prepayment meter can't rack up a debt? You must mean a normal credit account.

You would have received emails as soon as the account was opened. Did you respond telling them that you had not opened an account?

Write to OVO complaints , enclosing your evidence and ask them for a final reply within 8 weeks. Then if you're still not happy refer that to the Energy Ombudsman.
  • I found out when I was going through my spam folders and it come up with a account number and said register with your dob and account number in email for online billing so I did and it said Im on prepayment and its 14 months in arrears. I rang up and explained do sent them all evdiance and now they trying to get a court order they said my names been taken off but still getting emails
  • so I did and it said I'm on prepayment and its 14 months in arrears.

As someone previously pointed out, you can't be in arrears on a pre-payment meter.

If you don't put any credit on it, you can't use any energy.

It's much like a PAYG mobile phone, where, if you don't top it up, you can't make any calls.

I'm guessing someone opened a electricity account in your name that was moved to a pre payment meter when a debt was built up, I had something similar with catalogue accounts when I moved house many years ago, I just put together the information on my then current address, rental agreement, council tax and utility bills that showed I no longer lived in the property they were happy enough with that.
You will need to report the identity theft to the police and get a crime reference number and report to CIFAS to stop any future issues, it's a royal pain but it does eventually sort out.
