Filo from Alpkit. Detachable hood, very warm, and light. Currently on offer for £99.

Alpkit also have a couple of other designs that are worth a look.

Dare I suggest an MSE route first - checking out local charity shops? I bought a beautiful jacket last year for £4.00 - obviously virtually new but very grubby (pale pink). Quick swish round in the WM on a cold wash and it looked like it had come out of the shop brand new.

Obviously the donor didn't feel comfortable washing it, I took a chance for £4 and can't wait for it to be cold enough to wear it again this year :-)

Thanks FreeBear, that Filo looks to be a reasonable jacket for the price, just a bit concerned that the outer layer might not be very strong. Their Phantac looks even better but price is going up then.

The fact that they have a localish shop I can visit is good but they don't seem to specify the fill weight of their coats which is not good.

The Uniqlo ones are at the more lightweight end of the spectrum but are very nice. H&M also has a nice one, quite fashionable, good price and they ethically source.

I have two, an Eddie Bauer v light one which is great for all but the very coldest days, and a thicker Columbia one which is very warm, but too warm to wear yet.

I may have given you duff advice on H&M Romford, looks like it is sold out. However the Columbia sale starts in a few days (24th I think), so worth checking up on. Here's the full price page, so you can compare:
