Type 2 diabetes

I would like to make my mum a xmas hamper of treats she can enjoy that would be ok for someone diabetic. I have been looking in the Free From aisles in supermarkets but cant find anything that clearly states its fine for diabetics? Can anyone suggest things I could buy? Or is there somewhere that stocks diabetic foods? What do I look out for on labels? Is it 'sugar free' I need to look for?
Thanks

I was diagnosed type 2 10 years ago and all I have ever done is try to eat healthily and in moderation, I've never once bought any food that was aimed at diabetics simply because of the price.
Anything in moderation was the advice I was given and that is the road I have taken. I still eat curries, steak & chips, white bread and even the occassional bit of chocolate0 -
Yes, that is what I was told eat healthy not too much fat in the diet.
Oh and just a word of warning, those sugar free sweet treats etc give you the sh*ts.:D Better eating normal chocolate in moderation of course.0 -
Diabetes UK now advises people to eat anything, but in moderation. They specifically campaign against overpriced products aimed at Diabetics.

Just check out any food labelled as 'healthy', 'Reduced fat' etc, they'll be loaded with sugar and conversely 'Reduced Sugar' labelled food will be loaded with fat.
Ignore all fancy labels and just eat normal food, keep your weight down and do a bit of exercise, walking for 30 mins a day will do. I've been type 2 for 20 years and my checkups are good,0 -

I was about to post the same, but can add that they say some 'for diabetics' items can be worse than the sugar added versions as they can cause bowel problems and some actually have the same effect as sugar (raising levels).
Some recipe books claim the benefits of being sugar free. However, they often use honey, instead, but it's just another form of glucose0 -
Thanks all. You have given me plenty to think about. I need to put a bit more thought into this then. I naively thought I could just buy different bits and bobs aimed at diabetics. Maybe I could do her a really nice fruit hamper instead! I think she would like that.0

Chocolate which can be eaten in small portions needn't be ruled out.0

I have a type 2 diabetic in the family and I treat them to really nice quality dark chocolate (over 70% cocoa). they make it last a long time!0

Doesn't she have to limit the amount of fruit she eats?0
