Im a car newbie, thinking of buying my first car.
Well my dad has 4 no claims bonus's but he hasnt driven since 2002/3, what does this do to his no claims bonus. He believes that he's no claims bonus's have expired.
Is this true, can that even happen?
He's insurer was royal sunalliance.
thanks

NCB doesn't really expire ... but most insurers have a maximum length of time within which they will accept it. Most will say that your NCB has to come from a policy that expired in the last 2 or 3 years. I don't know of any insurers who will take NCB that is older than this (so your dad is probably out of luck).

im just going to do it with my uncle as first driver me as second....that would make my insurance around 700 but, just me is 3 grand, me and my dad is literally 2500 .....so adding my dad doesnt get me much0

Have you got a quote from Admiral/Elephant yet? When I was 20 they were the best quote by miles for my little Saxo (VTS ... ahh ... the memories).
The only warning I would give is that if you have your uncle as the first driver, he'll probably be expected to be the main driver. You may run into issues if he lives at a different address or can be proven not to be the main driver (you have an accident commuting to work etc). That said, I understand the cost of your firs policy so leave it up to you.

Unless your uncle lives at the same address, you're likely to run into problems if you name him as the main driver. You'll have no commuting use, you'll be asked by a lot of companies as to why the main user is not the registered keeper and if the car is stolen they may query why it was not at the main drivers residence overnight.
He also has no insurable interest in the vehicle which may affect any claim.
I'd shop around a bit more, cant see why your dad and uncle would vary so much premium wise - unless one has accidents/convictions. The ncb wont matter as your uncle cant use his ncb on two cars (assuming he already has his own).0 -
Also, if you are going to be the main driver you must be that on the policy - it isn't correct cover otherwise.0

hmm i see well im getting quotes around 2,500 .....thats with me alone and its on a corsa 2004 1.0 .....value around 4,000 pound
Its just too expensive...
CIS seems to have the cheapest quotes so far, the cheapest is 1200 me as second driver my dad as first
ecarinsurance gave me a quote for 1800 for myself alone....
elephant and admiral gave me very bad quotes
Any recomendations? Im luking to buy a 2004-2006 corsa 1.0 .....0 -
Is the £2500 for fully comprehensive insurance?
First post said "thinking about buying": have you bought the car yet?
How old are you? How long have you had a licence? (You might only have recently passed your test but did you have a provisional licence for three months or three years before passing.)
Would you consider doing an advanced driver course?0 -
Im 20, i have had the license for 4 months, i got my provisional at 18, didnt do much until i realised my theory was ending then i tuk around 30 lessons. After passing done the pass plus. However i have not had the proper time to buy a car as i was working too many days.
I am thinking to buy ...it will be my first car and i need one do to my lifestyle ....im going for a corsa because its a basic car....the smaller the engine the cheaper the insurance. So thats why im going for a 1.0.
The £2500 is for fully comprehensive.0 -
Hi
Well, if a £4K car costs £2.5K to insure fully comp, I would try insuring just 3rd party, fire and theft. See how much that saves you.0 -
Hi, I insured myself on my own when I was 19, on a 1.4i corsa and that cost me £854 fully comp, it then dropped to £490 for 9 months, and then £450 for 12 months the year after.
I have always been down as the main driver, do under 6000 miles PY, and placing someone else on the insuruance didnt help much at all.
Oh btw i have always been fully comp. Insurers were Its4Me, Norwich Union and EasyMoney.0
