17 yr old son has Tesco interview tomorrow

Hi guys

My 17byr old son has secured an interview with our local Tesco superstore which is expected to last around 2 hours.
Its for a P/T position after school and weekends

Has anyone just been through the process or offer any advice on what the likely process is so i can advise him accordingly and give him a good chance?

Thanks as always for your help

No idea about the process, but well done to him for actually getting that far!

My daughter has been looking for an eve/weekend job for months with no joy, it seems adults are now doing the jobs students used to rely on around here.

  • Yes couple of tips, I recruited retail staff for 25+ years!

A work ethic cannot be trained, evidence of that - active hobby, paper round, sports - something active!

Enthusiasm! most other requirements can be trained.

Self reliance! Make his own way to the interview as he would the job, no "My mum drove me here and she's waiting in the car park" types please.

Smart, polite, punctual, hard working, team player, trustworthy, confident, - That's what they want.

    Good luck!
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
  • Good luck to your boy. Best words/phrases to forget immediately are:
    reliable/honest/trust worthy.
Those are an absolute given in any workplace so stating them is a waste of time IMHO.

    Mr Generous nice tips –

But I would like to add some time it’s the people you know. I remember when I was a student, I knew people working at my local store. Position comes up, interviewed! and started the next day.

It was all paper work and I knew I will be starting soon!!!

    Good luck for your son.

From another site, I read that Tesco now use the Tuxedo Card to pay Students/part time workers. Never heard of it before but you can check out the link here..Tuxedo Solutions

Excellent advice from Mr. Generous though.
  • And reassure him that no-one will be expecting him to know what to do. They will however be expecting him to listen when they tell him what to do.

So, as far as the interview is concerned, he needs to turn up at the time he's been told to turn up, bring the paperwork he's been told to bring - and look bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to listen and learn.

  • Bit too late to reply, but I actually had a Tesco interview a few days ago (Just for some extra money around my full time job).

They did a joint interview with me (late 20s) and an 18 year old guy in college. All they really did was ask you some competency questions (2 in total) and had us on the shop floor stacking shelves for 20 mins or so. Then asking about availability.

To be fair but I think they were looking for 18-19 year olds and whether I get the job will depend on whether they get any more candidates or not. So in that respect, as long as your son was confident and friendly I think he will probably be ok :) Well, also don't forget that Tesco serve alcohol and they *may* have an 18+ policy for employees. Hopefully not though.

If your son gets it, try and impress the importance of turning up on time and being polite/friendly etc. Why? Because they'll potentially keep him on after Christmas and Tesco isn't that bad a job to start off in! Good luck to him!
  • I've been considering a short term evening/Saturday job. Maybe i could get something for xmas.
  • I didn't get the job!!

    Oh well!
