Would you be able to start your journey at London Paddington with a Clapham Junction to Exeter Central ticket though? As far as I can see, the Paddington trains never go via Clapham Junction...
The £82.90 ticket includes travel on London Underground.

So a passenger from Clapham Junc could travel by London Overground to West Brompton and District Line to Paddington.

Alternatively, SWR to Waterloo, then Bakerloo Line to Paddington.

Or any one of many other permutations.

So to answer your question... yes you can use that £82.50 ticket to start your journey at Paddington - particularly because when arriving at Paddington, no-one there will have any idea whether you have travelled from CLJ or not.
  • An additional question then - a friend has an Annual GOLD card, but it doesn't seem to apply the 33% discount when booking Paddington to Exeter. Could he book the CJ to Exeter Anytime Day Return (via London) using his GOLD card, then travel on the Paddington route as described above?

No the Gold Card zone does not cover the Paddington route to Exeter directly, instead you could look at Paddington to Newbury or Didcot Parkway and then a non-discounted ticket from there.
It would be discounted if the route Paddington-Reading-Basingstoke-Exeter was specified but that will take longer than just going from Waterloo to Exeter unless you happened to be starting from the Paddington area

but if he bought the Clapham Junction to Exeter train via London Terminals, as the poster above says, he could still be traveling "via London terminals" if he took the train from CJ to Paddington and then to Exeter from there?

Yes, but not using the Gold Card for a discount.

Gold Card discounted tickets are only valid in the area shown on this map: Annual Gold Card Area Map.

The only way to get to Exeter from Paddington using a Gold Card discounted ticket to Exeter is to travel via Basingstoke.
In which case the traveller from CLJ may just as well travel direct from CLJ to Exeter via Basingstoke.
