    Lots of GPs do exercise referrals to gyms so it might be worth checking if yours does.

  • 100% try the exercise referral route. its a 12 week course, funded by the government and your trainer will go through things to help you feel better about yourself, and try to improve your confidence in the meantime. its also just nice sometimes knowing that every week youll see someone, like a little chat and a catch up.

    also if you think you can, give mindfulness a go. i found Ruby Wax's Mindfulness for the Frazzled mind really good, shes relateable and funny, so it doesnt seem preachy. Honestly though, a lot of it comes down to acknowledging you feel pants, and being kind to yourself about it. tell yourself "i dont feel great, and thats ok, i dont have to~" and (personally i find) it takes a weight off straight away.

    Are you familiar with Headspace and Moodjuice for strategies to help symptoms?

    46 isn’t too late.

    I got divorced when I was 28 and didn’t have a steady partner for a while. I lived in London at the time and there were a lot of singles groups. The one I joined arranged Xmas breaks which were brilliant. One year I got on really well with someone and he contacted me later for a date.

    We got engaged after a short time, he was 48 and I was 44. We are still engaged :D and happily retired in Devon. This year we will celebrate our 22nd anniversary.
  • I am not surprised that you have a depression...I would recommend more sport and finally, find the hobby that brings you happiness. It`s too late to make kids but it`s never late to find a lady...Good luck man!

    You need excercise to release endorphins in your body. Humans are made up of body mind and soul. excercise all 3 !

    Another long term depression sufferer here. I'm worse through the winter months. I also have suspected chronic fatigue. And I'm terrible at sleeping.

    I would say to target yourself with a walk every day. Whatever you feel you can manage, as depression can be exhausting. If music helps drown the negative thoughts out, listen to music whilst you walk. Music can really help me, it drowns the negative voices out ("oh a headache you say? Must be a brain tumour")

    Accept that this is a "head below water" phase, which will pass.

    Finally, could it be an option to raise your meds for a short time to get through this phase? Maybe a telephone consultation with the Dr to discuss? 30th is too far away, you need support now. I have found some meds become less effective over time, just a thought.



    Fully empathise with your position and it's good you're exploring ways to help yourself.

    Me too. Been on medication for over 20 years . always raise the level in the winter months plus up my exercising


    Its a constant battle but you have to keep working on yourself.
