Nice game if you can stash piles of old tenners anywhere other than a bank and produce them months or even years after they've gone out of circulation. Now where's that stash of loot from that job in 1973........0

Wouldn't work.
Banks will only accept withdrawn notes usually up to 6 months after withdrawal, which is the Bank of England allowance to companies to get them back to the Bank.
Any notes like the 1973 tenner's you mentioned which were withdrawn well before the one being withdrawn now, you will have to deal direct with the B of E, which if the notes are legit, they will pay out.
Now if gotten by ill gain eg robbery, I would assume they would have a list of the numbers of the stolen notes
I would then suspect you would have a knock on your door by the NCA.The more I live, the more I learn.

Oh well, I guess I'll shove those pre-decimal notes back in the chest in the loft then....oh, and in 1973, I was still in short trousers, so they'll be no knock on the door from the NCA for me lol!0

With the pre-decimal notes, they will payout the face value in new cash value, so for a ten shilling note they will give you 50p, old £1 note a £1 etc, upwards. (Unless they were from that naughty heist.;) ).
They will do this on notes going right back to the set up of the Bank of England. But most of the time they are worth more than face value as collectors items.
As for short trousers, I heard you were the 70's equivalent of Mini Me.:DThe more I live, the more I learn.
