if you read the posts properly you MIGHT realise I didn't write because I was informed that the only way to cancel was to attend the gym in person and make a verbal request! I had no reason to question or suspect the information I was given by the gym, I only set about finding my contract after I realised I had been misinformed to prolong my membership.

i haven't used my student status as an excuse, it was simply stated to make the point that I had other priorities.

    Hi Spinx

I think you've imputed more to my post than was intended, but you still seem to be using your student "priorities" as an excuse. I think that once you cease to be a student you will discover that real life has more pressing priorities that those of a student.

You had a contract that said you had to cancel in writing. You did not do so. You rang the council and they said you had to appear in person to cancel. They were probably wrong to tell you that (did you ring the appropriate contact number for gym membership?). They probably ought to accept that they misled you and refund you - but if they don't, can you prove that they told you what you say they did? (I'm not doubting you - it's just that you need to be able to establish what they said.)

At the end of the day, you had signed up to a contract with certain terms and conditions which you should have known. You did not need to ring anyone - simply write to them and cancel. Being a student (which you mentioned as a reason for your predicament) doesn't really help you. Non-students have important priorities too.

(Edit: I've just realised the MSE forum team edited your reply to me for reasons of "personal abuse". Good luck after graduating...)
