It's inevitable that physical media will eventually disappear completely, but that's not good news for the consumer..
Once the initial hype of a game is over, all games are discounted to continue sales.
Yes, there are people who Must Have a game on the launch day but wait a little while and they always drop. This is not a "physical only" phenomenon. If a retailer / company wants to make money they have to sell, so they cant just opt "not to sell". Less profit, or tiered purchase prices from their supplier are a given.
Plus i do think we'll see a subscription model becoming prevalent, building on what we're already seeing with XBox Live, EA vault, etc.
You only have to look at the music and video markets. Whilst there is still a market for CD sales, and DVD / Blu Ray sales there has been a massive shift towards subscription - via Amazon, Netflix, etc whereby you pay a set amount and stream. I dont even have a device in use to play either physical DVDs, BluRays or CDs. Neither of our cars came with CD players. We just stream music to them, play via memory stick or use DAB radio.
And i would say overall i've access to probably x1000 the movies and music base i previously had and for less spend overall.0 -

Subscriptions that give you games tend to be older games. Cant see you getting the next cod on release day included in a monthly subscription.
Its an evolving market - i didnt say it was there yet but its not hard to see the direction its moving if you look (like XBox One S prices before Christmas. There may well always be a "premium" to be paid for the latest Must Have release on day one, but if people people dont perceive an older game to be VFM then either it wont sell or they'll have to reduce their price. Once they've recovered their development costs, this is easy to do.
It wouldnt be had to envision a subscription model where you could either pay a premium for the latest releases or rent them.
And who says the newest is always best? I'm quite happy to let the dust settle after a new release0 -

You do know that there are loads of other companies that sell digital downloads of games and not just PSN... right?
Just like with physical copies its a matter of shopping around and watching for deals0 -

Its up to people if they are happy to pay high prices for downloads. As i said, i wont be one of them.0 -

How often do people buy a download game for playstation from anywhere other than psn?0 -

Its such a shame that you only seem to view things subjectively and negatively rather than looking at it objectively and perhaps even at how it can work for you and in your favour.
With change there are opportunities, personally i look for the opportunities and how i can make the change work for me.0 -
donnajunkie wrote: »But they clearly dont follow that thinking because as i have said you often see games still at full price on psn while discounted in actual shops. If in the future they were only available on download via psn why would they be more likely to reduce prices with no competition from shops.
Whilst i'm more of an XBox user there are very often sales on PSN and sales on other sites supplying download codes, just like there are for XBox Live.
You only have to look at the likes of Steam and CDKeys as examples of how it could / will move.0 -

I've no idea. But people do have alternatives. Its about educating yourself to what those alternatives are and exploiting them. I bought game codes online from other established sources other than XBox Live when i had mine.
Dont forget there is huge competition out there across platforms - PS, XBox, Nintendo and very soon Google, so it wont be in anyones interest to have an infrastructure that suddenly prices their product out of the market.
It'll happen. People can either embrace it and look to take advantage of it and exploit it, or they can walk away.
Deciding this early that it cant work for you seems very blinkered.0
