Can someone recommend a basic sewing machine for a 9 year old?
Are they all electric?

Can't remember the last time I saw a manual machine on sale so yes, I think you are likely to be buying an electric machine.
Beware buying one of the machines such as those sold by John Lewis as 'mini' sewing machines at around £50. A friend bought one for her 10 year old but the child soon became frustrated by how basic the machine is (and how often it jams) and a once-keen stitcher has now lost interest. I suspect that is a far from unusual turn of events.
If the budget runs to it, one of the less expensive 'adult' sewing machines (Janome are excellent - and some have a speed control for safety) may be a better bet, not least because it should last for years.0 -
Thank you Pun
That's what I was thinking- prefer a proper machine rather than a "kiddie" one.
I will look into the Janome machines. The speed control sounds really good.0 -
I've had this one for 3 years and it has been brilliant: https://www.johnlewis.com/janome-dc3050-sewing-machine/p231340611
There is a speed control on the actual machine as well as the foot pedal.0 -
Have you got a local Facebook page where people sell items? You could always put a wanted ad on that page as my local Fb people are always doing that.0
