Problems with tax

3 years ago my wife got a letter for the tax office saying she owes £1447 unpaid tax.
She was at the time employed by a nursing home on PAYE all her pay slips shows she as paid tax and NI her last P60 from them showed the tax for that tax year as the same amount they where asking for. but the P60 showed it as paid.
Now every year around this time she gets letter asking for the amount to be paid, Every year she rings them up spending hours on the phone explaining its been paid, she has posted of copies of the wage slips and P60 but still she is being hounded for this payment, even though last year the guy on the phone said it was a mistake and the letter and prove of payment had been filed wrong, he told her that it would be corrected at their end, she asked for a letter stating that but it never arrived, now again a letter as arrived saying she owes this amount again.
How can we stop this nightmare £1447 is a lot of money having it hanging over you and the tax asking for full payment.
Any help would be grateful

This type of thing crops up occasionally on the Cutting Tax board and complaining is probably a waste of time.
Although you haven't really explained exactly why she owes the tax reading between the lines if it's because your wife's employer sent HMRC duff information the only thing that will resolve it (other than your wife paying it) is if her (former?) employer sends HMRC incorrect information.0 -
