Following up after an interview

I've never done this but... is it a good idea to follow up with an email after the interview, thanking them for their time etc? What do you use the email to convey?
It's an internal position if that makes any difference, so I know every interviewer.

If you know them and work with them I wouldn't.
I typically follow-up either the next day, usually with a question
or if the response date has expired.0 -
Never follow up, It smacks of desperation. You had your opportunity to impress at the interview. If they want you they will let you know. If the waiting is too long you probably wont get it.0
