Early Christmas Pay

Hi
Just looking for advice on early Christmas pay. My employer can not amend the pay day therefore I get paid two weeks before I should then have to wait till end of January for next pay day. I’m ok at budgeting but for those with no choice and not ok being disciplined - I just know a few people that would rather keep it as it was end of the month.
Is there anything I could do? Other than tell those just no to get carried away.

  • All you can do is to tell them not to empty their bank account every time money goes in there.

They could always move the surplus into another account temporarily if they can't stop using their debit card.

I'd go for the second account option too. If they've online banking they may be able to open a basic savings account on there, then they move it straight over and transfer it back when they would have normally received it.

It might be something they could use to help with future budgeting also.

You could always come in as normal on Christmas day, Boxing day, New Years day and do the payroll at the normal time...? What - you don't fancy that?!?

I appreciate it's not ideal, but payrolls for the beginning/end of the month tend to happen in week 3 of the month, which in December is usually when people prefer to be elsewhere; like being at home, eating turkey and slumped in front of the telly. You're paid early for practical reasons, not just 'cos your employer likes to make life difficult.

Furthermore, Christmas happens 'round about the same time every year. There's no reason for it to come as a surprise, or to fail to plan for it.

My last employer (a local authority) would do the December pay run in the first week of December - but the BACS payment date was always the last working day of the month.

That attracted complaints as well - from the people who wanted to be paid before Christmas.

Do you have pastoral responsibility for "those" people? If not it is hardly your business.

Employers really can't win over the Christmas pay date question. I've heard people complain about being paid early and blaming the firm when they run out of money due entirely to their own lack of self control. I've also heard people complain about not being paid early because they struggle to pay for the extras being bought in to cover the Christmas period.

if employees complained about this to me then I would just offer to move the pay day forward to no later than the 5th of the next month.

This happens with most companies these days. I work for a multi-national and we are always paid early in December. You can't be responsible for the way other people handle their money!
  • I once worked for an employer who paid the staff early for Christmas and then again slightly earlier in January.

Seemed to work ok for those who had no self control

Why don't you petition the government to build six-foot high brick walls along the side of every road to help those who aren't good at not running blindly out into traffic?

I started a few years ago giving my kids their pocket money monthly. If they spend it all in a week, tough. They don't spend it all in a week. The fact that grown adults can't learn this lesson astounds me.
