Advice re: returning incorrect items to Argos

This morning I collected one of the £9.99 ipod docking stations from Argos... Being the technophobe that I am, I thought I was buying a mini speaker system for it, not just the thing to connect it up to my telly/whatever.
Anyway, I have taken it out of the box and out of the packaging to look at it. Part of the plastic bags the pieces were in, is torn.
Are they likely to check inside the box when I return it? I was going to tell the truth - that I am an idiot and bought the wrong item, but I'm wondering whether they'll be picky because of me opening it first??
Thanks.

yes they are supposed to check and may well refuse to refund it if the packaging is ripped as it cannot then be resold. If you check the back of your reciept is does state that items must be returned in an unused condition and the packaging in the original unused contion.

Couldn't you just put the items into a new bag and tape it shut?
The items are unused so I wouldn't feel guilty about it and it isn't
likely that they will compare the packaging with another one!
If your store is anything like mine, the poor staff are too run off their
feet to spend much time on a return.0 -
i work for argos... so long as the outside packaging is still in good condition, the item is not damaged in any way and you have proof of purchase i would probably refund you. if it is just the little plastic bags inside that they put the various bits and pieces into inside the main packaging then i doubt you'd have too many problems - even with the strictest customer advisor on a bad day

go into store, be polite and friendly, but most important of all be honest. we see so many chancers and bare faced liars on a day to day basis that a bit of honest will take you a long wayknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0
