Friend has multiple offers (Perm and Contract) over 6 months. How to advice?

Hello all,

I am helping a friend through redundancy process.

Currently he is free after redundancy and is being offered a permanent position. (Company 1)

In Jan/Feb he is likely to get a 6 month contract from a different company (Company 2).

He is excited to work for Company 2 but needs some income right now.

What is a good advice in this situation?

Take Company 1 for now, and then resign in 2 months if he wins the contracting opportunity starting in Jan / Feb?

How likely is likely for Company 2? Still a chance it might not happen.

If he needs income now, tell him to take Company 1's offer. Work is work after all. If he doesn't like it and Company 2 comes along, hand notice in.

Problem is he'll also need some income after the 6 month contract with company 2 is up.

Going with company 1 for a couple of months and then chucking it in for company 2 would probably make it difficult to go back once the 6 months at company 2 are up, whereas the role at company 1 is permanent.

Suggest he goes for that - certainty probably trumps excitement, especially when it comes to paying the bills.
  • There is a good chance he will get Company 2.

He is in a position to do contracting for a while and if after the 6 month contract finishes, he could go full-time again with another company.
