JSA - Will my new employer know that I've been on JSA?

Hi guys,

I was recently made redundant after 9 years with my current employer and am currently looking for work. As money is drying up fast :(, I'll need some income to support me in the meantime.

My question is whether my new employer (once I get a job) or any future employees will find out or know that I've been on Jobseeker's Allowance? I could be completely imagining things, but do you have to supply a P45 (or any other document) to your new employer? If so, would that state that you were previously on Jobseeker's Allowance prior to joining your new employer?

I wouldn't generally be concerned about a future employer knowing that I've been on JSA, but the sad reality is i'm looking to enter into a professional line of work and am worried that it may have a prejudicial effect on their perception of me as an employee.

I'd be grateful for any responses, especially if you've claimed JSA and got a job or are familiar with these matters.

Thank you!

A P45 shows the 'employer' and if you have been in receipt of JSA that will show DWP or something similar. It's not a crime to be made redundant, neither is it a crime to claim those benefits to which you are entitled. To me it shows far more sense to get what income you can, along with National Insurance credits, than to struggle for money more than you otherwise would.
There is absolutely no stigma, in any organisation worth its salt, in claiming JSA.

Why would that matter, Why be snobby about the fact your on JSA or was. How else would you live or eat! Makes no difference.
  • Agree with previous posters but if you feel strongly about this then this is a procedure in place for new employees who are unable to supply a P45.

Your new employer would ask you to complete a new starter declaration and allocate you a tax code based on how you complete the declaration.

You may end up paying more tax than is strictly necessary for a short time but that will be resolved one way or another when your tax is reviewed after the end of the year.

If you do end up telling your new employer you have lost/haven't got a P45 then make sure you keep it yourself so you can check any calculation HMRC send you after they've checked your tax after the end of the year.
