Christmas: Is four gifts the way to go?

When purchasing gifts for family and friends, is buying four gifts for both mum and dad the best road to go down or doesn’t it matter and down to your financial circumstances?

I've heard of it before, on here, used as a way to cut down on the numerous stuff children get.

The first 2 lines should be the opposite way round to above, so that it rhymes

ie
'something they want
something they need
something to wear
and something to read'
