Like Whiteguineapig, we have a Miele washing machine and hoover as well. Not had either before, but got sick of paying for tat that only lasted a few years and decided to spend more for the quality and longer lifetime. Had the washer about 3.5 years and the hoover for about 8 months. Both doing great jobs, so far.0

Tumble dryers barely last 2 years in my experience. KEep using the airing cupboard until it is too much and then think about it when you need it. I'm sure family or friends will help out when needed.0

Yes, talking it over, we have decided not to go for a washer/drier. we are fine at present. We have a downstairs bathroom where an airer can sit for a day or two if need be.
We don't have a garage as such, but OH pointed out that if we become so incapacitated as to not be able to carry the washing upstairs permanently, then:
1. we would probably have a stair lift that could be used
2. he would probably have to give up his workshop, so a drier could sit there.
I am impressed that so many on here (who think very hard about spending their hard earned money) are Miele fans - you may also like to know that it scores very highly on Ethical Consumer.0 -
My older brother has a Miele washer/drier - because it is dual function the drum is smaller - meaning that he ends up bringing his bedding to mine cos he can't fit it in his!"Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience." Anon.0

Just a quick heads up - I got my Miele washing machine from their warehouse sale - it comes with a full Miele warrantee (and was fully serviced by them) - at much less than the full cost. Not sure when the next one is and you have to queue to get in so go very early (it's in Abingdon, Oxfordshire).
Hwere is the link to their outlet store:

Well, it goes to show that careful spending is worthwhile, and that I can't trust my memory!
We normally buy from a local shop, who do repairs, so I rang this morning. Oh no, said the owner / engineer, that machine is 13 years old, didn't you check? ( no, because I was so certain!). I described the problem, and he said " much as I'd love to sell you a new machine, I think that's fixable "
So he is coming to have a look at it, and I am reminded that I should always check the paperwork!
But thank you all anyway, I hope that others have found this thread useful, and I'll let you know how it goes.0
