Hi I have bought Netgear WGB111GUK 54Mbps Router and USB Adaptor from Argos and have had so many problems getting it to work on my desktop computerr. Finally after 2 hours on the phone with Netgear the router works but not the wireless bit. The signal keeps breaking up. The guy told me to move the computer to a different place in the house as something may be interfering with the signal but at the moment the desktop is right next to the router so am I being fobbed off? Any advice (preferably as untechnical as possible as I am a blonde!) woudl eb appreciated. Thx

Do you have a network card on your PC?
A hardwired connection is much more stable when connecting to your router.
Do you actually need the PC to be wireless, or is the router for another comp in the house to use as well?
I assume from that post that you are actually getting some kind of connection on your PC?0 -
I don't know what a network card is. But I do need the computer to be wireless as the phione line comes in through the study that my hubbie uses for work and I want the computer in anothetr room so that I don't disturb him. I can get an internet connection but only when the desktop is comnnected by cable to the router.0

you need to find out which device is giving the prob. try another laptop or dongle via wireless.
in my experience the dongle is far more likely to be u/s.Get some gorm.0 -
The network card is what you're already plugging the lead from the router into (at least I would assume it is unless you're using USB?). Should like a telephone connection on the end of the lead, only about twice the size.
As you can get a connection when hardwired, the router is working, so you can rule that out.
As Ormus said, it's normally the dongle, but if it's new, then that's unlikely.
Assuming that you have been through all the settings with Netgear support, then you should have checked that the router has enabled Radio broadcast?
I would personally disable wireless protection temporarily (until you have established a connection), and try with an open network. I've had connection issues in the past when using encryption.
After ensuring that radio is on, and encryption off, plug the dongle in. Does your taskbar show the wireless icon? If so, will it now let you connect to your network?0 -
have you encrypted it? Is the problem "limited or no connectivity", if so, it is likely to be a mismatched encryption key/type
if it connects then drops, then try changing channels 1, 6 or 11, and or let windows manage the wireless rather than the netgear software.

First of all, and I assume it is after phone calls to Netgear.
Is the wireless option switched on in the router?
Turn off any firewalls on the computer you are trying to get connected.
Turn off any wireless protection on the router. (turn it all back on one at a time when you have a connection)
Strange, I can't find that model on the Netgear site. Found out it's a DG834G and the WGB111GUK relates to a bundle pack.
Is it set as in the pic below? I am assuming you have a version 4 but if not it will be simmilar.0
