Hey thanks for suggestion. If I'd have bought with credit card I could have got the cash back straight away, but it was a debit card so such didn't work.

But I got it back thanks so all good.

It's good that you got it back, but when a charge is unauthorised it doesn't matter whether it's a credit card or a debit card that you used. That only relates to defaults under the consumer credit act.
  • Thank you for the clarification.

The police helpfully gave me the same advice.

My bank would not reverse it as they wanted some kind of proof that half of the purchase was not authorised.

I couldn't prove that it was their mistake that meant I was sent double the train tickets, rather than me somehow clicking 'buy' twice.

But regardless of that the company had agreed to a refund anyway. So that was the part that was under dispute.

I'd still recommend using a credit card for similar purchases as you do get more legal protection and while the transaction is disputed, no money leaves your account.

I'm pleased you've got your money back although that's a very poor way for the company to deal with their own mistake, unfortunately it seems typical of them as I haven't used them for a long time due to their bad reputation.

Going off topic here, but the Trainline, as with Ryanair and other more !!!!! operators, charge £2.50 or 2% for using a credit card and less or nothing for using a debit card.

I guess there's a reason they do that, as they know if they mess up they're less likely to have to be penalised for their mistake.

Virgin trains don't charge for using a credit card so I would just book through them instead.

The reason places charge for using a credit card is because they get charged for taking credit card payments.

You can book through any rail company. I use First Hull trains. No booking fee, no credit card fee, nectar points. 100% reliable so far.

I wonder who provides Virgin's booking service :D

I use TransPennine express, they are on TopCashback and give nectar points.
    No problem with them either.
  • Glad you got your money back.

I had two very poor experiences with the TheTrainline.com and their customer service and haven't used them since other than to check fares and times.
