Hi.

I was hired by a company to do nightshift, on a 4 on-4 off basis (48hrs per set). This came with a nightshift allowance. My husband works for the same company, but with opposite shifts- he works the nights I am off. Our pay and conditions are identical.

A TUPE was announced last month, effective the 1st November. There have been two comsultation meetings, and very little else- we found out about the meetings a couple of hours before by other staff- they were not widely publicised. At this point, nobody from either company has had any direct communication with us.

They have asked tonight to change my husbands hours, citing operational needs. The hours they are offering him leave me effectively out of a job- as I see very little ways they can continue to offer us both full time positions without the need for childcare (childcare was not a possibility at the start of my working with the company, they were aware of it.).
What options do we have? I have worked there almost 14 months, my husband coming up to three years. The changes also leave him 8 hrs short per week.

    1. Are you in a union? If you are, talk to them.

    2. You may not have many options. Your conditions are transferred, but the new employer can usually change them quite easily, needs of the business and all that.

    3. Your husband may be in a stronger position than you because he's been there more than two years, but see above.

    4. If that's your real name in your post, you probably want to edit it and remove it.

Operational or business requirements almost always trump any argument for no changes. That said - toy haven't yet spoken too them, so it is necessary to do so. For all you know, a simple conversation expanding things might be all that is needed.

Why is childcare not a possibility?
