Faced my shame and fears

Hi
i have been lurking here a while.
I have accumulated 30k in credit card debt. It started on maternity leave both times and has escalated - i continued to try and pay the same towards everything, then rwturned to work pt and was robbing Peter to pay paul etc. Just living entirely outwith my means. Then fell into consolidation trap. Never again.
I have had my head in the sand.
I now work full time and my children have started school. I have been juggling credit cards but it is getting increasingly difficult. Im not behind yet- but i will be if i cant sort this out.
I jointly own a flat outright with my sister which is on rhe market.
When and if that sells it will clear everything.
However property isn't shifting here.
The other issue is my husbamd and i have a shared equity mortgage with halifax. We have to pay thw house builder 20% (40k) by 2021. Our olan was we would remortgage to release the equity to pay the shared part. However we will not get a mortgage with my credit as it is. My experian credit report is only fair.
With that in mind i am reluctant to do a dmp bevause of this shared equity worry.
I have spoken to steochange today who were wonderful and a dmp would be good for my situation but dont want to procede till i am clarify the shared equity situ.
Today i also confessed my debt to my husband which had been worrying me sick more so than the debt. He is still with me. Thanks for listening. Cx

I don't understand the equity part but some of the knowledgeable folk here will be able to help.

Your first step is to put up an SOA so people can give you tailored advice, don't worry, nobody will judge you, we've all been there (and some of us are still fighting our way back with you!)

  • Thank you so much.
Husband and i have had a very good look at finances today . We found ways of cutting £178 per month so far. We were on a ridiculous sky ans BT package for a start and have switched energy providers.
Feel massively relieved to be doing something proactive.

Post an SOA - A true one, not one you think it should be or would like it to be.

Keep a spending diary so you can see where money drains away, the odd coffee, the odd pop to the shop for one item and you come out £10+ lighter. It's amazing how much these add up too over the month.

I'm sure you'll get lots of help here. Well done on taking the first steps
