assessed child at uni

Hi,
I'm a nrp with an assessment for 2 children. One of them has now left home and gone onto Uni.

Does this trigger a full reassessment or does the CSA just remove 1 child from the assessment ?

Does anyone know how long this process takes ?

I get different answers each time I call to find out.

Thanks

I might be wrong, but in my experience NOTHING triggers anything automatically at the CSA, you need to call them and be very specific about the fact that you want this child removing.

  • I called in August and asked what happens, they said to call back after the first week in September. I did this and they said its been dealt with.

After hearing nothing and still paying the same amount, I called them again. Spoke to the first advisor that said its noted on the system, then got cut off, called again got another advisor which said that a full re-assessment is required which will only include my details .. I'm on CSA1 and know that the PWC has a new job and new house, new husband and new child.

I realise that I can't reduce the payment until I'm told to do so, but my child has already left home and at this rate it could take months

    so frustrating

I would advise you not to deal with the CSA over the phone if you can help it. Put it in writing to them - recorded delivery. Then, even if it takes months to sort out, you can prove that you informed them of the change of circumstance. I don't know the answer to your specific question though, whether it triggers a full re-assessment, although I would be prepared for it to do so.

At the risk of sounding bitter, unless your ex happens to be an ex member of the spice girls you are unlikely to get any of her income included (I for one would ignore the new husband, cos let's face it their you and your ex's kids not really his financial responsiility - well thats my view) - She only has to be entitled to 1p a week in a 'prescribed benefit' and they will treat her as having no income, and with the high earning thresholds on WFTC it's highly likely that she will be in reciept of a 'prescribed benefit'.

That said, you caan get them to 'review her circumstances' in the same way that she can get them to review yours.
  • The house is irrelavant, as all it may do is increase her housing costs.
The fact she has a new child and husband will lessen her chances of being on WTC, and therefore she will need to give her details.

I have seen cases where just the child is removed, unless someone asks for something else to be considered.
Phone back and ask/demand that her details are also updated in the interests of fairness.

The fact your kids are older, and you will now only be paying for one may mean that your CSM is reduced as the requirement to pay is lower (goes down with age) and your ex's income may mean your combined ability to pay pushes you into the 15% upper band for older cases. (the lower band is 50% after allowances have been deducted)
    Nothing to see here
