Am I a preferential creditor?

Hi. I'm hoping someone can advise me on this. I worked freelance for an organisation that went into liquidation suddenly. There was no time to submit invoices for payment for work I had done for the company. As I freelancer I know I am not a preferential creditor with regard to payment for this work and I have simply lost out. However, I had already been paid by cheque for an invoice I had submitted but when I tried to lodge it after the liquidation notice, the bank account had already been frozen. I've received conflicting advice on whether this cheque should have been honoured. The insolvency company managing the liquidation says no. Any advice? Thanks.
