Problem with CCJ

Hi
I need some advice as to what to do with a CCJ on my account.
earlier in my life i got into bad debt with credit cards and loans. It came to a point where I had two CCJ's raised against me.
I set up two direct debits to start paying them off monthly and eventually paid one off with a final lump sum payment.
I then thought I would contact the other company in order to increase the direct debit amount so I could pay off the debt quicker and here is where the strange thing happened.
I found the original letter regarding the debt and contacted them only to be told that the debt wasn't with them anymore i then spent two hours being sent and told to contact various other departments and companies only to be told no one seems to have this debt.
Then I noticed a little later the direct debit wasn't going out my account anymore so i contacted my bank to be told that it had been cancelled by whomever was in control of it I guess.
Since then nothing I have paid of all my other debt but have this CCJ sitting on my account that now one is taking responsibility for and I cant pay.
I want to pay it off to improve my credit rating and im also worried that i might have bailiffs come knocking at the door for payment with extra charges.
Some help here would be great PLease
regards D

Hi dunc77
The CCJ will drop off your credit file 6 years after the date it was made, meaning new creditors will no longer be able to see it when they carry out a credit check. You will however still owe the debt and there could be a risk of you being pursued at some point. When a CCJ is over 6 years old a creditor will need special permission from the court to enforce it.
To find out who owns the debt you need to go back to the last company you know who owned it. If they tell you the debt was sold on to a new company, you will need to get in touch with the new company. If the new company say they have never owned the debt, ask them to confirm this in writing and go back to the previous company to tell them. If the new company say they had the debt but sold it on, you'll need to contact the company they sold it on to. Although this is an inconvenience to you, it's really the only way you will trace who owns the debt, unless they happen to get in touch directly with you.
Whilst you could apply to the court to set up a payment plan on the CCJ, I'm afraid this is pointless if you don't know who the payments should be made to (they can't be made to the court). However don't worry about county court bailiffs. They would have to give you 7 days notice before they visited and you would know at that point who the debt was owed to (as they would have instructed the bailiffs). That would mean you could apply to the court to stop the bailiff action and set up a payment plan. Good luck with it all.
