Late UTR registration

Hi there
I am employed to a company but last year I had an extra 2700 pounds for a side project that I did.
According to the hmrc website I need to do a self assessment but I missed the deadline for getting the utr in order to file the self assessment.
Do they penalise for that ? I read some blogs that say if you are late they might do investigations and etc.
Also on self assessment do you have to state the name of the company that paid you for this extra income ? What if it wasn't a company ?

Thanks

By last year do you mean tax year ended 5/4/17? If so then you are supposed to notify HMRC by 5 October 2017. However as long as you register and pay any tax due by 31/1/18 then there will be no tax penalties.
  • If by last year you mean the 16/17 tax year then as BoGoF says, you're late registering but there is no penalty as long as the self assessment is received by the January deadline.
