"...after considering their talent pool, economic vitality, environmental quality and business environment....New York tops this ...index, followed by London in second and Tokyo in third...The competitiveness of Hong Kong, the planet’s most expensive urban centre for owning a home, had been undermined by its property cost, the report said."

Surprisingly, there is no mention of the advantages that powerhouse, Edinburgh, enjoys thanks to the availability of cheap bedsitters on 21-year tenancies...

  • London is not only the historic capital of the English language, which contributes to its status as a powerful media hub and major advertising center, but it’s also the birthplace of the cultural, legal and business practices that define global capitalism.London hosts the headquarters of 68 companies on the 2012 Forbes Global 2000 list and is a popular location for the regional HQs of many multinationals. (Our HQ ranking component, in which London ranks third, is based on GaWC’s 2012 Command and Control Index, which factors in company size and financial performance, as well as total number of Forbes Global 2k HQs).

You don't appear to have read your own link, or you are trying to misrepresent the article.

The infographic places London as #4 now. It was #2 in 2011.

The, very edited, text you quoted is actually perfectly readable in full and relates to some enigmatic future potential London might have:
The report also has the global sustainable competitiveness index to evaluate the future potential of urban centres after considering their talent pool, economic vitality, environmental quality and business environment.

New York tops this sustainable index, followed by London in second and Tokyo in third. Shenzhen is at 35th place by this measure, while Hong Kong is at 13th place.

Although this is somewhat compromised by this:
The clout of technology brands matters in reshaping how cities compete, as it reflects the changing dynamics of the business world amid the rise of technology in the past decade, making it sensible to be used to “identify new global cities,” the UN-CASS report said.

New York, Beijing and Paris are home to the most valuable brands among the world’s top 10 cities, while Shenzhen came in at number eight by that measure.
“The number of valuable brands owned by traditional global cities such as London, Paris, and Tokyo is declining, whereas the number of brands owned by such cities as San Jose, Shenzhen, and Beijing is increasing sharply,” the report said.

It's nice that you had a dig at Edinburgh, one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in which to live in the UK. As far as rankings that actual matter to human beings, rather than soulless corporations looking for places to built glittering mausoleums of tax avoidance, Edinburgh is right up there at the top:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/news/article-3283019/Best-places-live-UK-Edinburgh-soars-138-areas-quality-life-league.html
Edinburgh has risen rapidly through the ranks of 138 UK areas to top a detailed quality of life league, research showed today.

Of course you will never know that because those revolting poor people with secure tenancies might try and ask you for 50p so you'll never go. But I don't think Edinburgh is any worse off for that.

Hey ho, I reckon London will always be in the top five cities, or maybe even the top non-US, English-speaking city (Singapore doesn't speak English doesn't it?).

OK then the top non-US, English-speaking city in a democratic country graded Free by the freedom institute.

And as for Edinburgh, it's a low-rise city with loads of room to expand. We should all be thankful it doesn't much want to.

  • Singapore speaks English all right. International cities have to. This is what rules out Edinburgh.

My understanding is that a lack of new affordable housing close to the City is what is holding Edinburgh back.
