I agree with your philosophy entirely spider. I'm in the fortunate position unlike many other posters where I choose to be mse because I hate being ripped off. I can then spend the money saved on whatever I choose whether that's books or anything else.:p
I call it my 'buying an iron' theory.
I always say that my husband and I do not go out to work to earn money to buy boring things like irons. Yes we need an iron, but if I can save money buying one then we can spend the saved money on nice things instead like cakes, books and films.0 -
Hubby uses the library as he reads really quickly and goes through a couple of books in a week. I tend to buy books cheaply as I read slowly (I enjoy reading) but my dyslexia means I can only read for short periods before I stop taking it in. If I took out library books the fines for finishing them late would be more costly than buying them cheap.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

It would need jacketing, an RFID tag adding, a barcode and then cataloguing.
Books bought from a supplier come with all this already done. They turn up at the correct branch library you zap it into the system and it can go straight onto the shelf. This is much more cost effective than having individual people buying books from supermarkets.
P.S. I used to run libraries.
Reading your last line it is obvious you would see it that way. Adding a barcode etc shouldn't take more than a few minutes but seeing as it is a council thing it probably takes two members of staff half a day to do one book.Debt Free and now a saver, conscious consumer, low waste lifestyler

Exactly, so after your friend has wasted time having a jolly shopping trip buying books from the supermarket she will be (apparently) wasting another 1/2 a day (along with a colleague) barcoding each book she bought. Not a good use of her time is it and no way to run a business?
Not sure why you felt the need to be so rude about people who work in libraries just because you did not agree with my post.0 -

The inter-library loans, across country borders, are priced differently. If an outsider wants to borrow a book from my local library it'll cost them £10.0

Wow - that is very expensive. You can probably buy the book cheaper.
I believe it should be free. You cannot have every book in every library, but they should be accessible to everyone (i.e. free).0 -
That is also a reduced price too. For inter-library loans the library itself is charged about £13.00 (it is probably more now as this was a few years ago). So they are giving it to you at a reduced price of £7- £8.0
