So I had a 6 monthly appraisal with my manager last week, nothing had been flagged to me as being an issue with my performance over this time so to my great surprise the opening gambit from my manager was that a member of my staff had thought I had laughed inappropriately during a conversation with them.
Being as this was a total shock I asked whom the person was and what the alleged situation had been but was only told that the comment had been made anonymously. I was then asked if this behaviour had been fed back to me in the past to which I genuinely replied no.
As this had never been raised to myself before as an issue I expected this to be just some helpful feedback, however at the end of the appraisal after going through my other performance metrics I then read my manager's summary of my previous 6 months performance which was that I had not treated other staff with respect (relating to this anonymous allegation).
This I found extremely unfair given that:-
1. Over the last 6 months I had never had my behaviour raised as a concern
2. I was not given the opportunity to defend myself as I was not even given details of this alleged incident
3. This item was used as a reflective representative of my past 6 months performance.
What recourse do I have on the above please?0 -
There should be space on the appraisal to respond to the manager's comments. In your situation, I would put that nothing had been said to me in the period leading up to the appraisal, and that I have no knowledge of the incident and don't agree with the comment in the appraisal. I would not sign the appraisal until the manager's summary was amended.0

Someone whined because in their opinion you laughed inappropriately.....sheesh, I think I'd be looking for a new job where people are a bit more robust!
Sorry that's not helpful, but my mind boggles.
I do agree that that can't stand if you can't defend yourself, and just for the sheer hell of it, I'd be complaining that you have been pre judged. And I'd not be signing it either. And I'd probably take up laughing at inappropriate moments as my new hobby.0 -
Astonishing. You should refused to sign the appraisal for exactly the reasons you have stated. If the manager is unwilling, I would raise a grievance.
It should have been dealt with at the time, not left until the appraisal. I'd keep pressing the manager for details - sounds like they've inflated things to me.Debt 1/1/17 - Credit Cards £17,280.23; overdrafts £3,777.24
Debt 5/1/18 - Credit Cards £3,188; overdrafts £00 -
Agreed. Don't sign it.
(the problem with the snowflake generation - someone laughed at me, i'm offended and I want someone, somewhere to do something about it!)
- look for a new job, unfortunately this isn't going to be a place where you thrive, but would you want to carry on being there?0 -
I was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome quite recently, never having the official medical diagnosis until I was in my 40's. I disclosed this information to my previous employers but then was made redundant and had to move onto another job.
My current employer sent me an electronic health questionnaire via e-mail before I started; given this was about a year ago I genuinely cannot remember if it had any questions on it regards Aspergers or mental health problems on it.
Last week I sat down for a mid year appraisal with my line manager; one of the standard questions on the appraisal form is behaving professionally and treating colleagues with respect. Out of the blue my line manager started flagging that he had noticed that in some situations he had noticed me laughing at inappropriate moments during serious conversations, he had never raised this as an issue with me before and I was quite taken aback.
My line manager then asked if anyone had flagged this to me before and I replied no, at the end of the appraisal he then made this point a large adverse chunk of my overall performance over the previous 6 months which I found to be very unfair.
At the time I did not even think about mentioning my Aspergers as being a potential cause of this seemingly inappropriate behaviour, in retrospect I have decided to see my line manager on Monday to discuss this with him.
My largest concern is that I cannot remember if I did divulge I had Aspergers on the Occupational Health Medical Questionnaire which then could leave me liable for dismissal if then I mention I have a disability which I didn't disclose, please can anyone advise as to the best course of action,
TIA
Oddly familiar, even down to the inaccurate spelling of inglorious.0 -
On the flip side, some managers do wait till appraisal to raise issues, i personally raise issues straight away and leave appraisals for marking you against whatever i set for you to do in the time period.
You can refuse to sign and say its not fair etc and it may get somewhat amended but it will make you feel better at best, as far as progression goes, it may not happen in that company.
Tbh i wouldn't want to work somewhere where they are making those kinds of complaints about me.0 -

Call me cynical, but is the score on this appraisal linked to a pay rise?
Maybe its nothing to do with a whiney coworker and everything to do with a stingy boss?0
