I am OK using the "A" for Advents but would prefer something like..

    A: Thorntons (FB)

    A: Thorntons (Tw)

Just so I knew which media the comp was on ;)

Sorry to be a PITA

I don't like the shortened thread title content, such as the example above Thorntons.

Some companies do a variety of products, and if it were, for example, one of Thorntons small gift bags I wouldn't bother, but if it were one of their boxes of chocolates I'd go into the post to enter.

Sorry if that seems annoying, but not everyone has much time during the advents so anything that helps compers look at the list and pick out what they're interested in entering for is helpful.

It doesn't have to be an all-singing & dancing title,

But agree that the "A" would help- saves typing out 'Advent' and making the thread title longer. And agree about knowing which media FB/TW/Inst.

During the rest of the year, while annoying if the FB or TW etc is missed off the title, it's not such an issue, but during the crazy advents it is essential it's there.

I will say and hope I don't sound rude :o

We can/have all had opinions :)

sleepyjones was the only person to volunteer to do the Advents thread for us this year she (is sleepy a she?) should post the Advents competitions the way that is the quickest and easiest to her :T

If folks don't like it maybe more will volunteer to do it next year ;)

I will add I am happy with whatever the Advent Comps poster wants to do cos I won't be volunteering :rotfl:

I think be too prescriptive about the thread titles isn't going to get noticed anyway. It will be hard enough for people to post A: not E:.

The main issue with putting the prize in the title of advent threads is that it tends to change dailey. Putting the first days prize can be misleading.

So the Thorntons one could be a mixture of small lets not bother prizes, money off and a big hamper full of chocolaty goodness; what do you put in the title then?

If it says A: 24/12 Thorntons - chocolate well duh. FB

    Then wouldn't that be enough?

    She is a he :)

The whole (FB /TW/ gleam) etc. thing isn't in dispute, it was never an intention to change that.

    "A: 24/12 Thorntons

You can then also add the usual (TW) / (FB) / (Weekly) type monickers at the end."

My issue is with titles that are too long and very rarely realistically give a good descriptor for the prizes on offer. Remember, this is just for the advents, not for normal posts where, i agree, a shortened title wouldn't work.

    A: 24/12 Thorntons
    E: 24/12 Thorntons

This should never arise because the Advent titles are shortened, they should be easier to spot ... normal competition will generally be "win a ...", so in that context it would be more like :

    A: 24/12 Thorntons
    E: 24/12 Win a box of chocolatees

As far as A: 24/12 ADVENT - Smiths (Amazon Vouchers) ... it's not gonna be Amazon vouchers every day, so you're luring people into the thread when the title doesn't necessarily relate to that days prize. The only thing you could realistically say is "various prizes", which is just as useless as having nothing but make it harder to distinguish as an advent (as above), what would you put for Spam? Theyll no doubt have a range of prizes from an "Eat more Spam" T- shirt to an ipad with who knows what inbetween .

I'm happy for a compromise but I don't know what that compromise is. I don't mind keeping ADVENT in the title but the idea was to use the A: 1) so you can sort and 2) to keep the titles short so they do stand out from normal comps ... would be good to keep the placing of the word ADVENT consistant though if people want to use it.

None of this is for my benefit, it really doesn't make a difference to me as far as updating the advents thread, I just copy and paste what people post ... it's more about trying to make it easier for users that don't use the advents thread. If we get the naming conventions right, next year the advents thread could just become a link to a search, we wouldn't need to post them all in a separate thread

Apologies for your sex change :o

I still think you are volunteering to run the thread so you do what you want, if folks don't like it let them do it next year ;)

    I do like the A: = Advents

Yes the prize will change daily

Most of us go through the bazillion Advents that are posted at the beginning of December and end up Bookmarking maybe 50 that we will enter daily, so after we have chosen what we want to do for the rest of the month the thread is not used.

What ever is best for you Mr sleepy :D

Just actually looking back at last years advents, most them are shortened anyway :

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5549865

So, its not really any different, just trying to get rid of titles like :

E: 24/12 (daily advent) lakeland - various prizes (open 01/12)

don't need to specify daily, don't need to specify various prizes (if it's weekly you would specify that, but the assumption would be that it's daily unless stated otherwise)

    E:31/12 Inghams Christmas Giveaway weekly

would just be A: 31/12 Inghams (weekly)

E: 09/10? Win With The Manchester Confidential Advent Calendar

    A: 09/10? Manchester Confidential

    etc

(not singling any particular poster out and there's nothing wrong with the way they were posted or titled ... just trying to get a consistent way to post)
  • I think the A: is a very good idea as it will also mean that we will be able to mark the ones we don't want to enter with the X button making it easier to go through them each day.

A short title would also be perfect as all you really need to know is the company running the advent.

Definitely a yes to adding FB/TW/RC etc as that would be a big help to those who don't do those comps thus saving time by skipping them.

I think where it's a not very well known company or where the name could refer to more than one similar company something like:

A: 24/12 Smiths (bookstore) Or A: 24/12 Smiths (toyshop) might be helpful ?

That sounds like a good idea.
