Hospital Waiting Times in NI

Hi All,

I am asking this question on behalf of an elderly relative who has experienced a number of falls recently as the result of needing a knee replacement. They have been on the waiting list for some considerable time, however a recent fall has caused a broken bone and the hospital have advised that these falls will continue until the knee operation occurs.

Is there anything that can be done to speed up his operation given the seriousness of the falls?

Unfortunately this is classed as elective surgery (ie. non urgent) and waiting lists are terrible for knees, hips etc.....

Get in touch with original referring consultant if possible and explain deterioration in condition, they may be able to push your relative a bit higher up the list.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

You can go down this route - read it carefully and follow the instructions. http://www.hscboard.hscni.net/travelfortreatment/the-directive-201124eu-on-cross-border-healthcare/
I know a few people who have had joint replacements done fairly quickly in the south of Ireland and had the cost refunded in full. It's not a well known scheme.

I got my pre assement done Dec last year for a Total Knee replacment and I have not had an appointment since despite my Gp writing several Letters
I picked Alnagelvin as I thought the wait would not be so long now I wish I had picked Musgrave.

  • Current waiting time in NI for knee replacement surgery on NHS is approx. 16 months. My Dad had one knee done in Musgrave in March (following a more than 16 month wait) and at a follow-up appointment in April/May the consultant placed him on the waiting list to have the other knee replaced and said it would be roughly 16 months.

Do you think there are no better possible MLAs than the ones elected in March? At all?

You never get the right people in politics because the right people won’t have anything to do with it!

There’s a great line from Ancient Greece - “those who consider themselves to be above politics find themselves ruled by their inferiors”.

Malachi O’Doherty wrote recently that it’s time to bring back majority rule. No party is big enough to rule outright now, so there would have to be coalitions. Might be the way out.
