Tax code query

Wondering if somebody could advise...

I've recently started a new job at the beginning of September and had a tax coding notice from HMRC telling me it was going to change to 964L. As far as I'm aware I should be on 1150L.

It is my third job in the current tax year, although I've never worked more than one job at a time. When I queried it with HMRC, they suggested lowering my allowance was because it was my third job in the current tax year and it was a way to ensure I didn't underpay tax.

With this in mind, I'm down about £30 a month. Although not a lot, I cannot understand as to why they've done this. My new employer sent off my P45 to them so they should have all relevant paperwork. My salary for all three jobs has been around 40k and I've always been on the correct tax code up until this latest lowering of my allowance.

Whether you've "worked" more than one job at a time is irrelevant, what matters is whether you've been paid in the same tax period.

For example if you stopped work for job 1 on say 10 June your final payslip will probably have been for tax month 3. If you moved onto job 2 straight away they are also likely to pay you for tax month 3 so even if they used the emergency tax code of 1150L you would have received two lots of tax allowances in one month and as a result have not paid enough tax overall.

All of which though is an educated guess without any actual figures or detail about how the new tax code is calculated i.e. what has been deducted from your personal allowance of £11,500?
